Remember seeing that weird wall clipping when you pan the camera at just right angle? That, times a thousand. Seeing what goes on behind the veil sucks. I started to see those worlds as little snippets instead of the lush worlds they were trying to represent. Once I understood how games are made and the limitations that they bring, I stopped actually playing games. It happened to me so there’s no reason why it wont happen to you. Your perception of games will most likely change. It’s not hard to export and view the package file and see exactly what you did. As soon as you hit that publish button, all the code you thought was genius will be shared with whoever subscribes. Don’t dump 500 hours into something because it will most likely get ripped off anyways.

One of the biggest content creators for games are the modders and the companies that release the modding software know that.

Of course there will be players who will call that out, but how many wont? How many will just simply download the “pirated” version of your mod anyways? Food for thought. Other people can and will take credit for your work and all they have to do is change some stuff, and not by much. Got some proprietary idea? too bad, it will be copied, shared, and discredited.

You can put it on Nexus and check that little box that says “not allowed” but the engine is open source, and so are your mods. And guess what, after they snag it up, they can use the code that you worked hard on and use it in THEIR mod. Your mod is out there for people to snag up for free. Working with a team can alleviate that but it can probably cause more problems too as the engine wasn’t built to handle multiple people working on one project.

I started to forget certain aspects of the engine and even forget how to simply get to some of the code I needed to adjust.

There are so many errors that will happen when working solo and as the project got bigger, my eyes got blurrier. If I was a single childless man, I would probably seek to move in with a couple of roommates and create a team that way. I’m also a family man so that alone makes logistics harder. I’ve always been a solo worker but it would have been nice to work with a couple of people locally. I don’t know if I had worked better with a team or not. Aside from a couple of “prefabs” that were shared to my Discord group, I had designed, built, and scripted my mods. These points aren’t in any particular order of importance. I see some people that have these grand ideas about what they want to make, and I want to give them a few words. I want to talk about the modding world for a bit. I was unhappy with the small levels that were available for GM’s so I decided to create my own. This mod was simpler because I didn’t have to do any scripting but I had compensated the lack of script by creating three large generic worlds for people to use. My second mod was a Huge Worlds mod for the Game Master option in Divinity Original Sin 2.

I left the script intact hoping that one day it will just “fix” itself. Along the way I found that some of my script simply didn’t work after a few patches went through and I have yet to find any sort of solution. That took a long time especially because this was my first mod, first engine, and first scripting experience. I had decided, for whatever reason, to fully script the encounters and dialog of the enemies, NPC’s, and companions on the journey through the campaign. My first mod is a D&D campaign recreation ( Pyramid of Shadows 4E) which I had played with a group a long time ago.

I have put in just over 500 hours into the Divinity Engine 2 creating two full mods that are pretty large in scale. I have been in the modding scene for about half a year now and I am exhausted.
